another common question I have is about
teenagers and parents are always asking
what's wrong with my teenager why is my
teenager always tired I think the first
thing to remember is that teenagers
bodies are changing they're growing more
rapidly than they have since they were a
baby so they need more sleep they need
more food and they need more rest to go
through that rapid period of growth as
they go through adolescence I think
every teenager is a little bit different
but there are some general principles to
follow one is to make sure that your
teenagers are getting enough sleep they
need a minimum of eight hours a night
and I think if you look closely at
teenagers sleeping patterns they're
oftentimes going to bed at midnight and
getting up early to go to school that
they're very involved in activities and
sports and their social lives and so you
may think they're getting enough sleep
but if you start counting hours they're
really low on those and they need a
minimum of eight hours sometimes
teenagers need 10 to 11 hours during
those rapidly-changing years another
important thing to focus on is their
diet teenagers need to eat regularly and
they need to eat healthy foods if they
focus on sleep and eating that will help
their general health make sure they're
getting plenty of exercise they need a
minimum of 30 minutes a day of vigorous
physical activity and preferably an hour
of physical exercise a day that will
help and then they need to be paying
attention to their social life that
they're not spending all their time on
the computer or in front of a TV that
they're getting out and participating in
interactive activities with other
teenagers or adults
