Why is my handwriting so messy

well the first reason you might have bad
handwriting is that you may never have
been taught very well in the first place
what happens is you go to school and you
get taught your letters and you learn to
draw circles and little lines against
the neck to them and you go a b c and
your teacher goes well down and you just
get used to that and then you have to
start joining those letters up and oh
you can learn to join those letters up
and your teacher says well done and then
your teacher says you're on your own now
basically from about the age of seven or
eight once you've learned to join your
letters up you are on your own
and unless you're really lucky and you
have a teacher who particularly likes
handwriting and particularly likes
encouraging and teaching how to form
beautiful letter shapes and encourages
you to write and practice every day then
you really are on your own and it's no
wonder your handwriting has deteriorated
over the years well the second reason
that you might have bad handwriting is
you're just plain lazy so there's only
one thing you can do about that and that
is to buck up your ideas
the third reason you might have bad
handwriting
you might be dyslexic uh i think i am
dyslexic i've never actually been
checked but once i started learning a
bit about dyslexia all sorts of things
kind of fell into place
and i realized that i would kind of
leave out paragraphs i would write words
back to front
i'd
start
writing at the end of the word to kind
of write and write a word backwards i do
all sorts of weird things maybe you are
dyslexic it's not a problem you can sort
it out number four you might be holding
your pen incorrectly you might be
grabbing it on really tight you're going
to be getting really tight muscles and
shoulders and everything and
maybe you just need to relax maybe you
just need to really watch how you write
i think maybe if i hold the pen in a
different way just try different ways of
holding the pain try relaxing as you do
it just try all sorts of different ways
of writing and you might certainly find
you find a new way of holding the paint
which really suits you and which really
helps you to write better you will find
that professional people who write
beautifully calligraphers and the like
they do tend to hold the pen
like that
and
if you hold it in a different way the
chances are you're gonna find it
difficult creating letter shapes because
letter shapes have been designed to be
written while you hold the pen
in that way so
if you don't hold it that way you are
just going against the whole kind of
grain of handwriting can you change the
way you hold your hand yes you can what
you have got is a habit the way you hold
your pen is is a habit and you just have
to keep working at it and working at it
create a whole new habit it can be done
it's not easy it's very hard work now
the fifth reason you might have bad
handwriting is because you hardly ever
do it and if you are of a certain kind
of age you may have been brought up
entirely
typing away on computers and you just
haven't actually put the hours in
writing essays
writing stuff uh you know you might it's
probably just been clicking away doing
multiple choice questions and you
haven't actually done much handwriting
to have beautiful handwriting it takes
practice practice means putting in the
hours and in the old days when people
had a pen in their hand for most of the
day they were putting in the practice as
they were doing whatever it was they did
throughout the day
if you're typing away on a computer
you're not putting in the hours which
leads on to number six
is you haven't practiced if you really
want to write beautifully you have to
practice and you have to
not not just practice putting in the act
you have to use your brain while you're
doing it consider
what you're doing consider the shapes
really work at it the seventh reason you
might have bad handwriting is i think
also my problem i write too fast or
rather i think too fast and i try to
write at the same speed that my brain is
thinking if you want to write as fast as
your brain is going learn shorthand if
you want to write legibly

the eighth reason you might have bad
handwriting is that you are full of
excuses you gotta get rid of all those
excuses my excuse was that i'm a genius
and i have all these brilliant ideas and
i've got to get them down on paper as
fast as i can so i would scribble
scribble scribbles scribble swivel
and when i came back to read my
fantastic ideas
i couldn't read a word of them because
they were totally illegible
and and i carried on with this excuse
for years and years and years that i
mustn't lose my ideas i've got to get my
ideas down as fast as i can
and and then
one day i thought this is rubbish and
and i sat down and i watched myself
writing
and and what it was it's in the previous
question i was going trying to write as
fast as my brain was going
so i made a conscious decision i was
going to write slowly
and clearly
and maybe i would lose a few ideas
but i would be able to read the ones
that i actually managed to get down on
paper and in fact by slowing down in
fact i found that the ideas
kind of edited along the way and what i
put down were the good ideas and i kind
of edited out the bad ideas and i didn't
need to write them down in the first
place
and so now when i write
my ideas down i get the ideas that i
want
and i can read them and because i'm
going slowly i get them written down in
a nice legible sort of thoughtful
organized way
so what kind of excuse have you got for
writing badly
and are you maintaining that excuse so
you keep telling you yourself that
excuse every day i can't write nicely
because
if you say that to yourself
break that habit of saying it and say i
can write that is
not a that is a bad excuse i can change
that whole
story that i have built up because this
is what we do we build up stories about
things we can and we can't do
and in fact you can do things
if you change the story
so there you go those are my nine tips
for better handwriting very little about
actually
handwriting isn't it it's all up here
