[Music]
hey y'all this is lala from la la farm
today i'm going to show you what i do
when i bring new animals to the farm or
when i bring ones back such as what we
did with the bucks from the west
virginia university buck test
get back
damn they stink
this is fresh from yesterday
[Music]
so as you know we've brought our four
bucks back from the west virginia
university buck test
while they were up there uh towards the
end we got notification that um they had
a little bit of a
respiratory virus going through
because of all the rain and stuff that
they had had up there
so originally they just treated the ones
that had symptoms and then the second
round uh they ended up treating
everybody
our bucks only got one of the treatments
and typically with that type of thing
you give two treatments as i said in our
video that we did when we brought them
back
i isolate mine um these guys will be
isolated for a week or two um
so that i can keep an eye on them to see
if they develop any problems
i noticed like late last night that um
one of the bucks is got quite a snotty
nose and he's got a little bit of a
wheeze going on there
so i consulted with my vet and we've
decided that because our boys only got
one round and that was back on august
20th
we decided to go ahead and uh treat them
for the respiratory virus so that it
doesn't infect the rest of my herd
so i'd rather treat four bucks instead
of 37 other goats so uh we're going to
go ahead and treat these guys
we're going to use an antibiotic called
exceed it's e x c e d e d c e x c e d e
anyway uh that's a antibiotic that i get
from my vet i'm going to give them a
treatment today
and then in four days i'll give them
another treatment and that should knock
it out i'm also going to use
i'm the one that's having some issues
breathing he's got quite a bit of snot
coming out of his nose and stuff i'm
gonna go ahead and use vet rx
um this is kind of a neat little thing
you just put a couple drops in their
nose and it kind of opens things up and
allows them to breathe easier so i keep
this on hand
just because of that it's
just
it doesn't go bad and it just sits in
there and
it's all natural so
i'll just go ahead and put a couple of
drops of that in his nose so you'll see
me do that too
um
other than that they're
healthy they're eating they're
doing really well so the dose is
calculated by
the doses right yeah the dose is
calculated by weight this specific
antibiotic you give
this is what it is
and you give um
1.5 ccs per 100 pounds
so what i did is i went ahead and got
all their weights and then i calculated
it before coming out here so i know how
much to pull for each one
so and this is kind of thick so i use an
18 gauge needle
um
so
you'll see me doing that too i'm not
going to be processing these guys so i'm
not concerned about any withdrawal time
i'm going to be getting everybody's
temperature as well while we do that
this is the one that's this is the one
that's been showing uh symptoms he's got
a lot of snot coming out stuff like that
dinar overlay
huh
so i don't
i do not like giving medication just for
the sake of giving medicine
um especially when it comes to anything
like antibiotics or rumors or anything
like that because it can build up
resistance
um but i want to be on the safe side
with these guys i know they were exposed
to something um because we were notified
of it
even though they had one
treatment up there that was on august
20th
and
i'm
very comfortable with the treatment that
they received and everything because
this guy is showing symptoms of
respiratory issues
um
like i described earlier with the snotty
nose discharge
and uh with you know heavy breathing and
a little bit of a wheezing going on i
want to go ahead and treat these guys
anyway even though it's not what i would
typically do
only because i know they came from off
farm and i am just really concerned that
they would spread this through my herd
respiratory issues spread very very
quickly
through herds so if you see one that is
having issues
you should pull them quickly and get
them away from the herd until you figure
out what's wrong with them um because
they will spread fast and goats get
pneumonia and they will go down quickly
from it so
um
but just wanted to make that clear i
don't typically just
do it for the sake of doing it when you
pull off medication for those of you who
don't know these bottles are um
you've probably seen them do it in a
doctor's office or whatever you
determine what the dosage is that you
need
and then you pull your needle back to
just beyond that dosage
and what you'll do is you will
insert the needle push the air up in and
then it allows you to draw off
[Music]
do you have trouble with the boys when
you go
okay so this is given under the skin um
subcutaneous is what it's called what
you do is you pull the skin up into a
tent you slide this in the side and then
you inject it under the skin um
inner muscular you actually go inward
into the muscle this should just go
under the skin to give it
so as i'm going to do he's got really
thick fur and not only is it thick
it's disgusting because they've been
peeing on himself
so
pop this up
put it in under the skin just like that
and then just inject it
i always make a note of what side that i
give injections on
keep that track of that in my records
that way if they show any signs of a
reaction or anything i know what it is
sometimes when you give a cdt they'll
develop a little nodule and it'll get
some pus in it and be nasty
and that way i can know that that's what
that is no
so
i'm also like i said i'm going to give
him a treatment as that rx because he's
the one that's got the really snotty
nose and i want him to be able to
breathe real well
and this will just help i usually use a
little tiny syringe but
you just do it this way too
oh that's nasty get the other side
there you go you only put just a little
drop yep we're good so that should do it
um give everybody a shot of exceed took
their temperatures nobody's running a
fever or anything like that but
we'll give them another shot in four
days just to cover everything what do
you guys use when you've got respiratory
issues on your farm write it in the
comments below we'd like to hear
remember always be kind to each other
