believe it or not a lot of people that
have dogs with sudden aggression are
also wondering what is going on why is
this happening suddenly and
a lot of the people that join my
recovering rover program which is my
signature program
to help treat aggression a lot of people
join that program in a hurry because
they just don't understand
why all of a sudden their dog is
reacting aggressively
but the number one thing to realize is
that aggression has a purpose
there is a reason that your dog is
behaving this way and it is our job
you and me it is our job to find out why
that
is in order to know what training
protocol is necessary
the first reason your dog might be
suddenly aggressive is because there is
some sort of
physical health issue this is something
that we talked a lot about in this video
and i recommend you check that out you
can open it in a new tab but
you really should be considering taking
your dog to the vet
right away in order to make sure that
there is no sort of physical
health issue a dog who is in pain or a
dog who is ill a dog
can't see well or hear well those dogs
are statistically more likely to
demonstrate aggression
and especially surprise aggression that
you did not see coming
that is something that needs to be ruled
out by a vet before you even talk to a
trainer or behaviorist
once you have ruled out health issues
then it's time to think about
what is your dog trying to achieve with
the aggression
is he trying to get you closer or is he
trying to get you away
now most people are going to say the dog
is trying to get me to go away
i'm going to answer that in just one
moment but if you believe that your dog
is actually trying to get you to engage
with him maybe it's acting as a play or
attention seeking behavior
if that's the case and i recommend you
check out this video yes it is more
geared towards puppies but
the technique you used in that video is
still going to be helpful for you
however most of the people i would
venture to say most of the people
checking out this video right now
probably lean under the category of
my dog definitely doesn't want me closer
my dog definitely does not want me
touching them interacting with them
and if that's the case keep watching if
your dog is suddenly aggressive and you
know that it's not a health issue you
know that your dog is asking for space
the first kind of thing that i would
think about is resource guarding
resource guarding is when a dog is
guarding a
resource that they need in order to
survive so
shelter water food a person
space whatever it may be that would be
considered resource guarding and
a lot of times people um
don't see these early signs when they
occur so it could be just something like
the dog flicks his eyes at you ahead of
time
or the dog may be just kind of pacing in
an area back and forth that was
something that we observed in this video
you can check that out after this
um but you might see that the dog is
kind of guarding an area
quietly and then one day all of a sudden
it turns into an episode
a more aggressive episode like lynching
or biting or whatever
so a lot of resource guarding starts off
very minimal
and then suddenly becomes excessive and
i would definitely consider
that is one of the possibilities for
your dog's sudden aggression
but if that's not the case then you need
to be thinking about what
context is causing your dog's sudden
aggression
is it happening in a recurring event so
maybe it only happens when you're trying
to put on a leash or put on
you know your dog's collar or whatever
or maybe your dog is only aggressing
during groom time like when you're doing
his nails or you're brushing him
so you want to see if there's a
recurring context or
context under which this aggression is
occurring
you're looking for patterns however if
you have thought of it and you're like
no i don't see any patterns then i still
have a hint for you i still have a
tidbit for you but
first if you're enjoying this video make
sure to hit that like button
let's get into the next part now if you
know it's not a physical health issue
you know that your dog is definitely
asking for more space your dog is not
attention seeking
your dog is not seeming to do it under a
specific context it seems randomized or
spontaneous
and yet your dog is still suddenly
aggressive towards you
well now it's time to really keep a log
now it's time to consider something
called trigger
stacking which is a big fancy phrase of
saying stressors that are
avalanching right you start off with
something small
and then it kind of build and build and
build into
a big implosion trigger stacking is
usually very subtle because it takes a
bunch of stressors that would not
typically send your dog over the edge
would not typically send your dog
you know into a full-fledged aggression
but when it happens over and over and
over again
now you get an aggressive event so you
might have noticed that your dog
is sensitive when you take him to go
play at the park
and also your mailman knocked on the
door
three times today and that made him bark
and also
you know meal time came later than usual
so you need to start keeping a log of
every little thing that causes your dog
stress
regardless of good stress and bad stress
you need to realize that stress is
neutral so even if it's happy
even if you're taking your dog for a
walk and they're sniffing all the time
if it's very taxing on the body or you
know in any degree takes
a lot of energy then that can be a
stressor and so
that in conjunction with other stressors
can catapult and to trigger stacking
this is something that generally is
harder for people to
track this is something that the common
dog owner usually isn't
an expert at right away but i promise
you if you
keep a log of every little detail you
will see a pattern
and therefore it will become more
predictable your dog's aggression will
become
more predictable and it'll be easier for
you to treat and handle
remember that there are technically 10
different types of dog aggression if you
want a breakdown of that whole list you
can check out that video right there
but there are technically 10 different
types of aggression and these were just
kind of a quick
review for you to kind of get a starting
point but
i recommend that you check out my dog
